The custom home building process can seem confusing and overwhelming at first. At Preston Homes of Texas, we want you to be as comfortable and confident as possible during the entire custom home building process.
The Custom Home Building Process
The custom home building process begins with planning. Planning is a key element for success and satisfaction during custom home construction. From planning until the day we hand you the keys, Preston Homes of Texas will guide you throughout the entire custom home building process.
Architectural Design
The first step in custom home building is to discuss your design ideas and hopes for your finished home. Preston Homes of Texas will inquire about and thoroughly talk through the design elements you want to see in your home. This ensures that the design is carefully thought out and that we cover design elements and items that you may not have thought about otherwise.
At Preston Homes of Texas we have a a magnificent in-house architectural design team. Our team can create absolutely anything that you can dream up. Whether your dream is a simple, family home to a home of complete luxury and extravagance, the motto of our design team is:
“You Dream It, We Build It.”
Not all of our customers require our design team to create architectural plans. If you already have a design in mind or architect with whom you wish to work, we will gladly work with the individuals you choose. Our goal at Preston Homes of Texas is to build you the home of your dreams, and to provide superior customer service during the custom home building process. We are flexible to the needs of our clients and are more than happy to work with your architect, or have you discuss you ideas with our in-house design team. We want to create complete, build-able construction plans that fit into your specific custom home budget.
Construction Documents and Financing
In the custom home building process, design and financing go hand-in-hand. Both the home builder and your financial institution will need a comprehensive, finalized plan to effectively estimate the cost of building your dream home. In addition, your financial institution will require a contract signed by your builder to be submitted with your loan application. This step is needed in order to proceed with the final loan approval.
As your builder and partner, Preston Homes of Texas will guide you step-by-step during the custom home building process. We want to ensure that no detail is missed so that you are able to arrive at a place where your financial institution can review your vision of your dream home, and approve your financing.
Home Construction
Upon receiving approval from your financial institution, Preston Homes of Texas will proceed with obtaining the necessary permits. When this has been completed, construction on your dream home will begin.
In addition to the work of construction crews, many inspections will occur during the custom home building process. Even if the community you have chosen to build in does not require inspections, Preston Homes of Texas will have an independent inspection company provide this service for you. We are sure to include inspections, even when not required, because we want to provide you with validation and confidence that your custom home is being built according to the highest standards and quality.
While the custom home building process varies from project to project, a rough idea of what to expect and when follows.
- Site preparation and pouring the foundation
- Inspection of the foundation components
- Rough framing
- Rough plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems
- Inspection of the completed rough framing, plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems

- Install bathroom fixtures, complete mechanical trim
- Completion of flooring, installation of items such as mirrors and shower doors
- Inspection of the home
- Final walk through with builder
We walk every client through their new home and provide a home demonstration. The National Association of Home Builders notes the importance of the final walk-through, stating “this walk-through provides an opportunity to spot items that may need to be corrected or adjusted, to learn about the way your new home works and to ask questions about anything you don’t understand.”
Each project varies in the amount of time required to complete the entire custom home building process. At Preston Homes of Texas, we intentionally limit the amount of homes we build each year to ensure that every client gets the attention they deserve. We would love to discuss the home of your dreams with you, and we would be honored to make those dreams a reality. Contact Preston Homes of Texas today to start making your dreams come true.
